WordPress powers most business websites in Pakistan, and out of the box it is reasonably SEO friendly. The problems usually come from themes, plugins, and settings nobody revisited after launch. This checklist covers the technical items worth checking on any WordPress business site, in the order they matter.
Crawling and indexing
- Settings then Reading: make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.
- Check robots.txt is not blocking important folders.
- Confirm an XML sitemap exists and submit it in Google Search Console.
- Review which content types are in the sitemap. Demo or utility post types added by a theme should be excluded.
- Set thin auto-generated archives such as tag and author pages to noindex unless you actively use them.
If pages are missing from Google entirely, work through why a website is not showing on Google first.
Site structure and URLs
- Use a clean permalink structure: Settings then Permalinks then “Post name”.
- Keep URLs short and readable. Avoid dates and numbers.
- Every important page should be reachable within a few clicks of the homepage.
- Fix or redirect broken internal links. A crawl tool will list them.
- Set up 301 redirects for any URLs you change so you do not lose their ranking.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
- Use a caching plugin. Many Pakistani hosts run LiteSpeed, which has its own cache plugin worth using.
- Compress images before upload and serve modern formats like WebP.
- Enable lazy loading for images and iframes.
- Remove plugins you are not using. Each one adds scripts and database load.
- Test on a real phone on mobile data, not office wifi, and check the report in Search Console.
Mobile
- Google indexes the mobile version, so it must contain the same content as desktop.
- Check tap targets are not too small and text is readable without zooming.
- Make sure popups do not cover the whole screen on mobile.
HTTPS and security
- The whole site should load over HTTPS with no mixed-content warnings.
- Keep WordPress core, theme and plugins updated.
- Remove or replace nulled premium plugins. They are a common source of hidden spam and malware that can get a site penalised.
Structured data
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your real name, address and phone number.
- Add breadcrumb schema if your theme shows breadcrumbs.

On-page basics across the site
- One H1 per page that matches the page’s topic.
- A unique title tag and meta description on every indexable page.
- Descriptive alt text on content images. Leave purely decorative images with empty alt.
- No duplicate pages competing for the same term.
