You built a website, it has been live for weeks, and searching for it barely brings anything up. This is one of the most common problems small businesses bring to us, and it is usually one of a short list of causes. Most are quick to fix once you know which one it is.
1. The site is too new
Google needs time to find and index a new site. A week or two of nothing is normal. Speed it up by adding the site to Google Search Console and submitting your XML sitemap.
2. Search engines are blocked in WordPress
Under Settings then Reading there is a checkbox: “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”. If it was left ticked after the site was built, Google is being told to stay away. Check this first. Also confirm your robots.txt is not disallowing everything.
3. Pages are set to noindex
An SEO plugin or theme setting can mark individual pages “noindex”, which removes them from search. Check the SEO settings on the specific pages that are missing.
4. It has not been indexed yet
Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If nothing shows, the site is not indexed at all. If some pages show and others do not, it is a page-level issue. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to ask Google to crawl a specific page.
5. You are searching for terms you cannot realistically rank for yet
Expecting to appear for “web design” or “SEO services” with a month-old site means competing against hundreds of established players. Search your exact business name and a few very specific phrases instead. If you show up for those, indexing is fine and the real task is competing for the harder terms over time.
6. Duplicate or thin content
If most pages are near-empty or copied from elsewhere, Google may index them and rank them nowhere. Pages need enough genuine, useful content to earn a position. Demo content left over from a theme is a common culprit.
7. A manual penalty or hacked content
Rare, but check Search Console for a manual actions notice, and look for spam pages you did not create, which can appear if the site was compromised through an outdated plugin or a nulled theme.
8. The site is very slow or breaks on mobile
Google indexes the mobile version of your site. If it is slow to load or elements fail on a phone, that holds back both indexing and ranking. Test it on a real phone on mobile data, not office wifi.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a new website to appear on Google?
Usually a few days to two weeks once the site is submitted in Search Console with a sitemap. Without that, it can take longer for Google to discover it.
Why does my website show for its name but nothing else?
That means indexing is working. Not ranking for competitive terms is normal for a new or small site and is a separate, longer piece of work.
What is the “site:” search and how do I use it?
Type site:yourdomain.com into Google. It lists the pages Google has indexed for your domain. If it returns nothing, your site is not indexed.
Can a plugin stop my site from being indexed?
Yes. SEO and maintenance plugins can apply “noindex” site-wide or per page, and some security or “coming soon” plugins block crawlers entirely. Check their settings.
Does site speed stop a website from being indexed?
Severe speed problems can slow crawling and indexing, and they hold back ranking. A very slow mobile site is worth fixing regardless.
